Many people have heard about tantra, and I am often asked to explain to them what the benefits are from practicing. For the majority of people in this country, tantra will be about enhancing sex, but it is important to remember that tantra has deeper levels, and that traditional tantra aims to bring the practitioner to a place of enlightenment. With that in mind, I will be discussing the benefits with the western reader in mind, but will also include some of the deeper benefits, that tend to come as a natural byproduct.
One of the greatest benefits of tantra is that the practitioner learns to be in the moment with his or her partner. Of course, learning to be in the now during intimate encounters, leads to greater rapport, which in turn, brings about the development of deeper connection. As the connection grows between the partners engaging in tantra, it is not uncommon for them to begin to feel as if they are merging together, and becoming one single being. I have heard participants in workshops say that they cold not tell where their body ends, and where the body of their partner begins. Needless to say, entering into such an amazing state, promotes a sexual experience that can only be described as transcendent. The transcendental state can often be felt so strongly that participants notice a surge of ecstatic energy coursing through their bodies. With some practice, this energy can be harnessed to the point of producing full body orgasms, and these orgasms do not even require what most people normally think of as sex. It is not uncommon for people to begin to feel wave after wave of ecstatic orgasmic bliss, and to be able to ride these waves for a prolonged period of time. It is through these, and other, experiences that people can begin to find a transformation that flows over into other parts of life. Many find that their capacity for loving, fulfilling relationships grows. Many also find greater joy, health, and vitality in their everyday existence. Of course, being able to have such wonderful byproducts, will often lead to, what some will consider to be a spiritual awakening; which brings us back to the traditional intent of Tantra... enlightenment. It is important to understand that practicing tantra does not require any specific religious belief. Yes, traditional teachings deal with the connection of the goddess Shakti and the god Shiva, but to enjoy the benefits that are to be found in this amazing practice need not interfere with your present spiritual path. When I teach workshops, I always do my best to make it clear that while knowing more than the techniques is useful, there is no need to accept any spiritual doctrine in order to be able to enjoy the benefits of tantra. The best way to start exploring tantra is by attending a live class, and receiving personal instruction. If you are going to be in the Albuquerque, New Mexico at the end of this month, I invite you to join me for the upcoming Tantra 101 and Energy Orgasm workshops that I will be presenting. Tantra 101 will be held on August, 29, 2012 and the Energy Orgasm Workshop will be on September, 5, 2012. Both workshops will be held as the Self Serve Sexuality Resource Center.
